Research discussed in this episode

1)
In her research, Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist at Stanford University, presents a fascinating perspective on stress. Like many other researchers, her primary aim was helping people avoid stress, however, she came across research that flipped these initial ideas on their head.

Contrary to popular belief, she suggests that in certain circumstances, stress can have a positive effect on your health. A 2010 study found that the small portion of Americans who viewed stress as positive had a 43% lower chance of premature death compared to those who saw stress as destructive.

McGonigal found that when individuals learn how to assess stress as a challenge, rather than a threat, it can be a stimulus for growth. This can be traced right back to the neurotransmitter level.

So if you reframe your nervous feelings as feelings of excitement, it can lead to several benefits. Embracing stress increases resilience. By facing and overcoming challenging situations, we develop the ability to bounce back stronger and more resilient than before.

By embracing stress, we can enhance our cardiovascular health, increase resilience, promote longevity, and foster meaningful social connections. So, let’s welcome stress as a valuable tool for personal growth and well-being.

2)
Researchers have uncovered three powerful characteristics of inspiration: evocation, transcendence, and approach motivation. It’s like a lightning bolt from outside yourself, lifting you beyond the ordinary and flooding you with vivid and concrete awareness.

It lights a fire under your trading aspirations, urging you to take action and believe in your ability to achieve greatness.

Questions we address in this episode:

  1. How do you recover from such a high-pressure environment and settle into everyday life?
  2. How do you calm down after landing on something effectively the size of a football field in the middle of the ocean?
  3. How do you recover from screwing it up?
  4. Do you feel you enter a flow state while you’re flying and landing?
  5. Did you do survival training in the desert? Tell me about that.
  6. How do you ignore noise and focus on the target?
  7. What about target lock? Apparently, 11% of skydiving fatalities are due to parachutists failing to pull the emergency chute. Has target lock been a problem for you?
  8. I was told once: “The secret of a good SAS soldier is making the right decision based on incomplete information”. This is exactly what happens with traders. How do you live with uncertainty?
  9. What’s the importance of practice? Are simulations the same as when you’re executing that manoeuvre in real life?
  10. What’s the importance of following checklists?
  11. Do you feel that the transition into civilian life was difficult because your purpose was no longer as clearly defined?
  12. I’m very curious about transcendental experiences. Can you tell me how this has impacted you?
